Teraina Island Council

Teraina, also known as Washington Island, is part of the Linnix Group in Kiribati and previously lacked mobile network service. Through the UAF Project, Teraina has been provided with internet access and Wi-Fi, a project completed in 2024 in collaboration with KOIRAP. KOIRAP funded the Starlink terminals for island councils, while the UAF project covered logistics and installation costs.

Digital Access for Fanning Island

The Universal Access Fund (UAF) has successfully extended internet connectivity to Tabuaeran (Fanning) Island, one of the remaining islands in Kiribati without mobile network service. This initiative provides internet access and Wi-Fi expansion from the Island Council office, with funding covering one year of internet bandwidth.

To ensure sustainability, the Island Council has received a practical business model for Wi-Fi service delivery. This approach enables the council to generate revenue while building capacity to operate independently after the UAF support period concludes.

Banaba Island Council

The Universal Access Fund (UAF) has successfully funded internet access and Wi-Fi expansion across Banaba Island (Ocean Island), one of Kiribati's previously unconnected communities. Solar-powered Wi-Fi sites now enable Banaban citizens to communicate with family throughout Kiribati and abroad.

The project provides one year of bandwidth subscription alongside a sustainable business model, empowering local management to sell Wi-Fi services and prepare for independent operations after the initial support period ends.
