Banaba

The Universal Access Fund (UAF) has successfully funded internet access and Wi-Fi expansion across Banaba Island (Ocean Island), one of Kiribati's previously unconnected communities. Solar-powered Wi-Fi sites now enable Banaban citizens to communicate with family throughout Kiribati and abroad.

The project provides one year of bandwidth subscription alongside a sustainable business model, empowering local management to sell Wi-Fi services and prepare for independent operations after the initial support period ends.

This vital connectivity has transformed daily life on the island, facilitating essential communications for residents, students, healthcare workers, and police. The initiative represents a significant step forward in ensuring all Kiribati communities can participate in today's digital world.
